  • Fast moving northbound Union Pacific 8895 leading a lengthy run of hoppers that appeared to be empty, racing through the tiny town of Dorris, CA. Located between Mt. Shasta and the Oregon border, it's a city in the Butte Valley, Siskiyou County with a booming population of 939 according to the 2010 Census. The rail line was formerly operated by the Southern Pacific Railroad, which named the town in 1907 after livestock owners, Presley A. and Carlos J. Dorris. The Dorris brothers raised stock in Little Shasta in the 1860s before moving to what became known as Alturas, CA in 1876.

  • Located in the Shasta Cascade area of Northern California, Dunsmuir is a popular destination for tourists. Dunsmuir is located on the Upper Sacramento River, a blue ribbon trout stream that attracts fishermen from all over the world. Wild rainbow trout abound in the river. The town is also a destination for historical and cultural tourists, as the town has preserved an authentic 1920s and 1930s look and feel. Dunsmuir's long connection with the railroad draws railfans to enjoy the sights and sounds of the railroad in the steep Sacramento River canyon. Dunsmuir is officially a Union Pacific "Train Town" and enjoys many financial benefits because of its relationship with the railroad.
